DLA chemist leading efforts in alternative fuel, other DOD bulk fuel initiatives

Lindsey Hicks has served the Defense Logistics Agency as a pioneering chemist for over 30 years. He is currently the program manager leading DLA Research & Development’s Energy Readiness Program supporting the Defense Department’s bulk fuel and energy supply system. ERP’s strategic focus areas are fuel refining and distribution, fuel instability and contamination issues, and alternative fuel certification efforts.

A fuel handler’s storied 42-year career

Chuck Allyson’s storied career in fuel has carried him from Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland; through Fort Lee and Fort Belvoir in Virginia; to Germany, South Korea, and Alaska. His final duty assignment landed him traveling throughout the northeast region of New England. After 21 years in the Army and another 21 years working as a civilian DLA fuel quality assurance representative, it’s time to move on.

Fueling DoD’s northernmost installation

Once a year, when the weather and ice conditions allow, DLA Energy experts plan for the delivery of fuel to the Defense Department’s northernmost installation, Thule Air Base, Greenland. In late July, DLA Energy quality assurance specialists took advantage of the warmer weather to make the delivery.

New commander tours Europe and Africa fuel lab

One of five DLA Energy fuel laboratories worldwide, the Europe & Africa facility at the Rhine Ordnance Barracks in Germany tests around 2,000 fuel samples each year including routine quality surveillance, investigations of possible contamination as well as testing for secured fuels. DLA Energy Europe & Africa’s new commander Army Lt. Col. Benverren Fortune visited the lab to learn more about its capabilities and services June 10.

DLA Energy maintains fuel quality with modified procedures

Quality assurance representatives at DLA Energy are modifying procedures to ensure military fuel remains on-spec during the COVID-19 pandemic. They are closely synchronizing fuel movements with suppliers, and in some cases where there is an acceptable level of risk to the supply chain, using remote oversight methods to overcome restricted travel and social distancing requirements.

Fuel tanker inspection video saves money, educates soldiers

A new DLA Energy video demonstrates military fuel truck inspection procedures saving the government thousands of dollars and man hours. Army Soldiers will use the video, which details the high quality standards of capitalized jet fuel through the transportation process, to prepare for the U.S. Army Reserve’s annual Quartermaster Liquid Logistics Exercise.

NATO partner tours DLA Energy petroleum lab

Representatives from the Netherlands Ministry of Defense visited DLA Energy Europe & Africa’s Petroleum Laboratory to learn about its fuel testing capabilities, Oct. 15. Leaders toured the Rhine Ordnance Barracks facility in Germany to gain a better understanding of how aviation and ground fuels are tested for quality and purity.
