Pentagon gives DLA awards for CFC efforts

By DLA Public Affairs

The Defense Logistics Agency was honored for its contributions to the 2016 Combined Federal Campaign at a Pentagon ceremony Jan. 26, where Deputy Secretary of Defense Robert Work presented the awards.

Employees in DLA Headquarters and DLA Energy pledged a total of $326,106.21. This was 103.5 percent of the agency’s assigned goal of $315,000. DLA also won the award for Best Overall Communications Program for medium-sized Department of Defense organizations. For 2016, DLA’s CFC program was administered by DLA Human Resources.

“Throughout DLA Headquarters and DLA Energy, we had more than 120 CFC volunteers — members of the [DLA HR] CFC core team, team captains, key workers — and other people who supported us, such as Graphics, Facilities, Security, Public Affairs and the Legal team,” said Kathy Rhem, communications manager for DLA HR and this year’s CFC campaign manager for DLA Headquarters and DLA Energy.

“Every one of those people played a role in us exceeding our goal and winning the award,” she added. “We had a lot of fun with some of our fundraising events and making the Mannequin Challenge video, but I know I speak for the whole team in saying we're most happy we raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for organizations that do good in their communities and around the world.”

In addition, Gerald (Jerry) Barb, physical security specialist at DLA Installation Support, Fort Belvoir, received the John L. Moreland CFC Loaned Executive of the Year Award. Barb served as a CFC liaison and mentor for the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Defense Information Systems Agency, who combined raised more than $1.3 million for charities selected by DoD personnel.

“There simply was no task he couldn't handle with professionalism and a positive attitude,” said Curtis Rumbaugh of Washington Headquarters Services.

“Jerry did an outstanding job,” agreed Bruce Thomas, deputy staff director for security and emergency services at DLA Installation Support, Fort Belvoir, Virginia.

For the 2017 CFC, DLA HR will hand off the agency’s responsibility to DLA Logistics Operations at the DLA CFC awards ceremony Thursday, Feb. 9, at 10 a.m. in the Kabeiseman Conference Center of the McNamara HQC.
