Richmond, Va. –
Defense Logistics Agency’s Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Program and DLA employees at Defense Supply Center Richmond, Virginia, supported the U.S. Army Reserve 80th Training Command’s (The Army School System) fifth annual 5K Run/Walk for Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month on April 28.
DLA Aviation Sexual Assault Response Coordinator, Katrina Leverette collaborated with the 80th Training Command to organize and host the DSCR event. Leverette was a crucial player in notifying the DLA community about the event using internal broadcasts and flyers.
“I felt that communication was key in driving participation in the event,” said Leverette. “My ultimate goal is prevention, so any event that will further that cause is important to support and bring awareness to.”
In addition to employees, family members like Courtney Rackley, the wife of Corey Rackley, DLA Aviation contract specialist supervisor, showed up to support the race.
“I run all the time and it can be scary,” said Courtney Rackley. “I tell my husband that he doesn’t understand how it feels to be scared to run in public. If you get somewhere that’s desolate, it’s dangerous because you don’t know what is out there, so any time we can bring awareness to a subject like this it is good.”
“We always culminate [Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month] with the 5k Run,” said Army Sgt. Maj. William Downey, senior enlisted advisor, DLA Joint Reserve Force. “If one sexual assault or harassment happens, then that’s one too many.” Downey added that if one does happen, then he wants the community to be knowledgeable about the organizations and resources that can assist a survivor like DLA’s Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Program.
