MWR holds first Bellwood Bash at DSCR

By Army Sgt. Saul Rosa DLA Aviation Public Affairs

Defense Logistics Agency Installation Support at Richmond’s Morale Welfare and Recreation Office held the first Bellwood Bash Family and Friends Day Celebration May 18 at Defense Supply Center Richmond, Virginia.

The event kicked off with a 5k Fun Run and included musical entertainment, pickle ball, horseshoes, vendors and a dunking booth.

“The event was a huge success for the entire MWR Richmond team and volunteers,” said Lamar Denno, marketing manager, DLA Installation Support at Richmond. “The community support and turnout was much larger than anticipated and gives us the inspiration to continue to engage community in new and exciting ways.”

Denno said he faced many challenges putting the event together, but catering the lunch was the most difficult. However, with the support of the MWR and Center Restaurant staff, the team was able to feed the community.

“Determining what would get the community members excited about the event, whether it was music, food or activities, it all had to be carefully planned out,” said Denno. “Sweat and lots of effort from our limited staff and volunteers spearheaded the efforts that went into the event. I could not be more proud of our Center Restaurant staff especially when considering most team members had no experience with this type of event.”

Army Maj. Alex Shimabukuro, DLA Aviation Army Costumer Facing Division operations officer, attended the bash with his wife and two children, arriving just as Installation Support Director David Gibson was volunteering in the dunking tank, operated by the Civilian Welfare Fund.

“This is a great event for the kids,” said Shimabukuro. “It’s good to see everyone out and enjoying the installation and having fun together.”

Although this may have been the first Bellwood Bash Family and Friends Day Celebration, MWR plans on making this an annual community event. But this isn’t the only way MWR is reaching out to the Defense Supply Center Richmond family to provide fun and enrich their lives.

“We at MWR are committed to providing fun amenities, functions or rental equipment that is aimed at enhancing the quality of life for our service members, civilians, retirees and families,” said Denno. “This was our first annual Bellwood Bash and we will continue to improve the details to help make this event even better.”
