DLA Distribution Commanding General's Columbus Day Message

DLA Distribution Public Affairs

DLA Distribution Team,

In a few days, we will observe Columbus Day commemorating Christopher Columbus’ first landing in the New World 525 years ago.  Great perseverance, dedication, and courage defined this expedition and those who sailed on this landmark voyage.

Over the past several months, the DLA Distribution team has also demonstrated great perseverance, dedication, and courage as our DLA Distribution Expeditionary Teams (DDXX), DoD Civilian Volunteers, Active Duty Military, and Expeditionary Reservist Service Members have deployed to multiple locations and operated Incident Support Bases providing critical food, water, and supplies to those affected by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria.  This expeditionary support, along with the tremendous support from multiple Distribution Centers providing MREs, cots, tents, and other critical supplies, as well as a herculean effort from the Distribution Headquarters team synchronizing the effort and providing transportation support, has been absolutely awe inspiring.  Our efforts have not gone unnoticed and have been recognized by the DLA Director and at the highest levels of the Department of Defense.  I cannot express enough my sincere appreciation for all the tireless work and dedication provided to our fellow citizens in the aftermath of these devastating events, all while never letting down our guard and continuously providing exceptional support to our Warfighters.

Columbus Day is the first holiday weekend of the fall season and safety must always remain our top priority as cooler temperatures are accompanied by many different safety risks.  As the days become shorter, risks associated with limited visibility increase and make it hard for drivers to see and react to critical situations.  Additionally, late night weekend travel is one of the greatest threats to us all, particularly when alcohol is involved.  Every year, senseless injuries occur as the result of speeding, unsafe vehicles, and overindulgence in alcohol.

In addition to the holiday, October is Fire Prevention Month, a time to check  your work areas and homes for fire hazards, review your fire evacuation plans, inspect smoke detectors, and change their batteries.

I would like to thank each of you for everything you do daily for DLA and our Warfighters. On behalf of Ms. Gonzales and me, and from my family to yours, enjoy some well-deserved time with family and friends and thank you for what you do every day.  I am proud to be on your team!

Happy Columbus Day!
