DLA Distribution Sigonella military meets with Spanish partners

By DLA Distribution Public Affairs

Military personnel from Defense Logistics Agency Distribution Sigonella, Italy, visited the Spanish Air Force’s Grappa detachment, currently operating out of Naval Air Station Sigonella to discuss logistics achievements in support of operations in the Mediterranean.

Over a traditional Spanish breakfast of hot chocolate and fresh churros, DLA Distribution military personnel and their allied Air Force partners discussed Grappa’s participation in Operation Sophia, the European Union’s humanitarian mission to reduce human smuggling in the Mediterranean.

Operation Sophia is the effort to curb human trafficking in the Mediterranean and prevent loss of life at sea mainly along the Libya Italy route.

The Spanish detachment conducts water patrols throughout the South Central Mediterranean with the purpose of identifying and capturing vessels suspected of being used by human traffickers and rendering assistance to migrants stranded at sea.

The mission, headquartered out of Rome, Italy, launched in June 2015 and is approved to run through December 2018.
