Patriot Day honors memory of those killed, injured in Sept. 11 attacks

By DLA Public Affairs

Eighteen years have passed since al-Qaida terrorized the United States with coordinated attacks that killed almost 3,000 people at the World Trade Center, Pentagon and aboard Flight 93. Over 6,000 people were injured. The tragedy continues as others die from cancer and respiratory diseases directly related to the attacks.

The Defense Logistics Agency and tenant agencies of the McNamara Headquarters Complex honor their memory Sept. 11 as part of Patriot Day.

On this day, the national flag is flown at half-staff on all government buildings and individuals are encouraged to display flags on their homes. Americans are also called to observe Patriot Day with a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. EDT, the time the first airplane struck the World Trade Center.

Patriot Day was first held in 2002 after a proclamation by President George W. Bush. In 2009, President Barack Obama rededicated it as both Patriot Day and a National Day of Service and Remembrance, inspiring Americans to volunteer in their local communities in tribute to the individuals lost and injured.
