Mentoring Networks at DLA Land and Maritime

By Brenda Minnema DLA Land and Maritime People and Culture

On Sept. 19, 11 Level I mentees attended a three-hour session, "Networking on Purpose," facilitated by Kathy Drahosz, president and founder of the Mentoring Connection. After learning why networking is important and how it benefits their career and relationships overall, the Level I mentees were given the opportunity to apply this newly gained knowledge by participating in speed mentoring sessions with the Level III mentees.

The second half of the session had the Level I mentees rotate with 10 of the current and former Level III mentees volunteering their time to make this session more impactful for the Level I mentees.  Discussion topics included:

How did you get into your current position?
Would you make the same career choice again?  Why or why not?
What abilities or personal qualities do you believe contribute most to success?

Professional development, career aspirations, networking opportunities, information interviews, job shadowing, organizational involvement, councils, special projects, conflict resolution, time management, furthering education and training were other topics explored through the speed mentoring discussions.
