Sasebo team expedites critical parts delivery to USS Lake Erie

By DLA Distribution Public Affairs

During the evening of Sept. 17, a medical evacuation message was released from the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Lake Erie (CG 70). The USS Lake Erie Supply Team immediately reached out to the Fleet Logistics Center Yokosuka, Site Sasebo logistics support representative. The ship’s team was already familiar with the work and the level of service provided by the logistics support representatives at Sasebo, and wasted no time getting them on the phone. It appeared the USS Lake Erie would not be able to pull into port and could not conduct a helicopter operation for the MEDEVAC. Instead, the USS Lake Erie team would use a rubber hulled inflatable boat to transport the MEDEVAC service member to shore and transport casualty repair parts on hand at DLA Distribution Site Sasebo. The expedited response of the ESOC personnel and Fleet Logistics Center, Site Sasebo teams made the mission a success.

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Herrera, Fleet Logistics Center, Site Sasebo, supported the last minute coordination of the emergent requirement and notified the DLA Distribution Yokosuka, Japan, at Sasebo ESOC team of the emergent USS Lake Erie CASREP delivery requirement. Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Enrito Jambalos Jr., DLA Distribution Sasebo, consolidated and manifested the CASREP parts and met Herrera at the pier where the RHIB would dock.

In the dark of the night, after MEDVAC operations were complete, Jambalos and Herrera transferred the CASREP parts to the RHIB that would later enble the USS lake Erie helicopters to return to fully mission capable. The efficiency with which Herrera and Jambalos worked together to use all means necessary to bring readiness to the fleet is exemplary of the flexible and responsive support that DLa Distribution Yokosuka Japan and Fleet Logistics Center Yokosuka Japan bring to the Indo-Pacom area of responsibility.
