DLA Aviation Navy Lieutenant receives fleet support logistics award

By Cathy Hopkins DLA Aviation Public Affairs

Navy Lt. Angeli Rodriguez received the Alva Bryan Lasswell Award for Fleet Support at the Town and Country Resort and Convention Center, San Diego, California, during the National Defense Industrial Association’s Fall Defense and Industry Forum, Oct. 8.

Rodriguez, operations officer, Defense Logistics Agency Aviation at San Diego, has been part of the industrial support activity and Fleet Readiness Center Southwest team since January 2017.

Rodriguez spearheaded the planning and implementation of a pilot program to provide build-sets to the Hydraulics Shop at FRCSW.  Build-sets or kits consist of piece parts, tools, fixtures and other required materials and information the artisan uses within the immediate work area for aircraft maintenance.

She organized a cross-functional team with personnel from DLA Aviation, DLA Distribution, Naval Supply Systems Command, Weapons Systems Support and FRCSW to perform a supportability analysis of bills of material and re-warehouse inventory to support production.

According to the award citation, making the kitted material available in the supply system and pre-positioning it next to the artisan’s shop for daily use promoted immediate material availability, more visibility on high demand requirements and ultimately succeeded in a higher rate of component repairs for fleet use.

Rodriguez’s concept of build-sets for repairs helped to drive repair turnaround time down and helped FRCSW to meet the 2018 Commander Naval Air Force’s goal of 341 mission capable F-18 Super Hornet aircraft.

The award is named after Marine Corps Major Alva Bryan Lasswell who was a cryptologist stationed at Pearl Harbor in 1942. He worked day and night to decipher radio traffic of the Japanese navy, helping to trigger the American victory at Midway Island. He was innovative, believed in excellence, and worked tenaciously to get the job done.

Innovation, excellence, and tenacity are the hallmarks of this award, according to the NDIA’s website.
