Battle Creek traffic management specialist recognized

By Jake Joy DLA Disposition Services Public Affairs

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. - Michigan-based Traffic Management Specialist Brian Kemp was named a Defense Logistics Agency Disposition Services Employee of the Quarter for his contributions at the close of fiscal 2020.

Kemp, who has split his time in Battle Creek between DLA Distribution and Disposition Services since joining the agency in 2014, said he appreciates interacting with customers, resolving conflicts and navigating the varied pace of duties and responsibilities his job demands. He cited his daily work with teammates as the thing he enjoys most about warfighter support with DLA.

“I have the best teammates in DLA and am continually impressed with their efforts and abilities,” Kemp said. “My selection as employee of the quarter is a direct reflection of the production levels we achieve – not only as individuals – but as a team. The level of work we complete would not be possible without the teamwork and continuity that is continually displayed by all.”

Kemp produced nearly 600 commercial bills of lading in the final quarter of 2020 and promptly cancelled and regenerated pandemic-related transportation issues and “was lauded for his dedication and problem-solving skill set” by region directors, according to his award nomination.

“Brian has surpassed his daily expectation of 10 bills a day, which would have equated to 450 Bills of Lading, generating an average of just over 13, surpassing his required amount by 140 Bills,” wrote Traffic Management Specialist Randy Schafer. “This does not take into consideration his prep work and the fact that certain loads take two to three times the processing time. He sets the standard for working up to two weeks in advance of pickups to help his schedulers monitor upcoming shipments to resolve potential issues, resulting in saved paperwork and [avoidance of] additional shipping fees.”

Kemp was also cited for his teamwork and second-to-none expertise on handling complicated shipments and navigating legal requirements for interstate movements.
