BATTLE CREEK, Mich –
Navy Lt. Edward Arca was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander in a small ceremony held at the Hart-Dole-Inouye Federal Center July 6.
DLA Disposition Services Director Mike Cannon presided over the ceremony and reflected on the importance of this career milestone for Arca.
“The term commander isn’t just a cool word in the military, it is a huge responsibility when you become a field officer,” Cannon said. “It’s taken seriously because you’re not promoted because you did a great job as a lieutenant, you’re getting promoted because of your potential to serve in a higher capacity.”
Arca’s family attended alongside members of DLA Disposition Services senior leadership team. This was the first time in a year that visitors were invited into the HDIFC.
He thanked his family for their continued support and closed with, “it’s an honor and privilege to serve and continue to serve my country.”
In 2002, Arca graduated from University of Hawaii with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication. After several years working in retail, he enlisted in the United States Navy as a sonar technician. He graduated from Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Illinois, in the fall of 2004 and attended Basic Enlisted Submarine School and Sonar Technician Accession Training in Groton, Connecticut.
From November 2005 to November 2008, Arca served as a sonar technician onboard the USS Olympia (SSN 717), based out of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
In November 2008 he was selected to attend Officer Candidate School. After receiving his commission and supply officer designation in the spring of 2009, he attended Navy Supply Corps School, Athens, Georgia. After graduation, he reported to the USS Antietam (CG 54) as the disbursing and sales officer.
Arca served as Officer in Charge for Commander, Fleet Air Forward Aviation Support Division Detachment in Guam. He reported to USS Higgins (DDG 76) as supply officer. After attaining a Master of Business Administration in Acquisition and Contract Management at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, he was laterally transferred through the Full Time Support Officer Program and received assignment to DLA Disposition Services in Battle Creek, Michigan, to serve as operational support officer.
Arca’s personal awards include Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, Navy Achievement Medals and Good Conduct Medal. He is qualified Surface Warfare Supply Corps Officer and Naval Aviation Supply Officer.
