What do you do?

Provide leadership and management of Excess Useable/Non-Useable and Hazardous Property in the U.K., Turkey, and Portugal (with additional responsibilities in the Azores and Norway).

How long have you worked for DLA Disposition Services?

22 years.

Anything you like best about DLA?

Our team, and the complexity and variety of work.

What is the best piece of advice someone has given you?

“Join the Air Force” (my dad) during the Vietnam conflict. This led to everything else in my career.

Any good Disposition Services memories?

When I took over leadership of Europe and the Middle East office during the DRMS International days, when I was active duty, and the great people I worked with.

What is one characteristic that you believe every leader should possess?

Integrity.

Do you have a leadership philosophy?

Putting the team first, before oneself, leads to high morale and respect all around.

Any times you definitely saw your efforts were making a difference?

[Supporting] Commander, Defense Fuels Office Balkans, providing fuel support to 19 nations as part of the NATO-led multinational peace implementation force in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

What do you look for when evaluating top talent?

Ability to effectively communicate, team player, respect others.

Your biggest accomplishment?

Being a husband, father and good person, with kindness and respect taking center stage.

Any best practices for achieving goals or accomplishing tasks?

Working as part of one’s team, enabling other members to do their best by setting realistic goals and targets.

What mistakes have you seen individuals make that prevent them from being successful?

Lack of respect for people, lack of teamwork, too much micromanagement (not trusting the team).

What would you have done differently in your career if given the opportunity?

Chosen a diplomatic career with the State Department.

Read any good books recently?

Truman, by David McCullough.

Your first job?

Working in the cafeteria kitchen at Tufts University while in high school.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

Many things (fireman, history teacher, etc.).

Any heroes? 

President John F. Kennedy, Winston Churchill, Carl Yastrzemski, Muhammad Ali and Bobby Orr when growing up.

Any hobbies?

Walking, snorkeling, visiting historic and scenic places, traveling, and reading.
