Sustainment – 21st LRS supports Operation Pacer Goose

By Airman 1st Class Kaitlin Castillo Space Base Delta 1 Public Affairs

Members of Peterson Space Force Base, Colorado, coalesced with multiple organizations to provide support during Operation Pacer Goose at Thule Air Base, Greenland.

Operation Pacer Goose is an annual mission to resupply of Thule AB, which typically runs from July to August of each year.

During the last six months, Nelson Alequin, 21st Logistics Readiness Squadron transportations and distribution element chief, and Dean Firestien, 21st LRS cargo movement supervisor, provided mission assurance by coordinating support actions across 14 contractors and 20 different suppliers; these efforts to the successful departure of about 521,611 pounds of cargo valued at $4.3 million, as well as 260,617 gallons of petroleum products.

Space Base Delta 1 and the 21st LRS worked with the Defense Logistics Agency and the U.S. Transportation Command to provide essential equipment and supplies.

During Operation Pacer Goose, the unit provides customer service, bench stock, equipment and parts support, as well as shipping and receiving functions to all the units and contractors attached to Thule to ensure the systems are, and continue to stay, operational at all times.  The squadron also supports the early warning and defense of ballistic missile launches against the United States and Southern Canada to the North American Aerospace Defense Command and JCS Command Centers.

The mission began in 1952 with the 21st LRS taking over the mission in 2017 from Air Force Space Command, currently known as Space Operations Command.

This mission is the life support system of Thule AB, said Firestien. Thule AB was resupplied with approximately 6.7 million gallons of jet fuel and 600,000 pounds of dry goods. An Arctic-rated containerized generator was also amongst the cargo load. The generator provides contingency power options for Thule in the event of infrastructure power production challenges.

“It has been a great experience being able to work as the program manager for the Pacer Goose mission,” said Alequin. “I am grateful to have the opportunity to work with an amazing group of individuals to ensure the folks at Thule get the supplies they need to continue the mission.”

No matter the need, the 21st LRS Traffic Management Team is always prepared to provide the right capabilities, to the right place, at the right time.
