YOKOSUKA, Japan –
Navy Chief Petty Officer Murphy Royal, former Emergency Supply Operations Center and Future Planning chief at Defense Logistics Agency Distribution Yokosuka, Japan, has received the Global Distribution Excellence: Senior Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year award for his exceptional performance, outstanding professional skills, knowledge and leadership.
“Chief Royal is an absolute superior leader and manager,” said Navy Cmdr. Brian Johnson, commander of the distribution center.
Royal trained 35 Sailors in providing logistical combat support to more than 85 Forward Deployed Naval Forces and 25 Marine Expeditionary Units operating in the Area of Responsibility. His efforts contributed towards the trans-shipment of more than 15,000 line items of mission essential material, valued at $265 million, in support of multiple joint exercises.
During the humanitarian mission Operation Damayan in the Philippines, Royal prepared and manifested 140 pallets of aid.
“His team provided superior customer service to all the joint forces deployed throughout the Pacific,” said Johnson.
Royal was also awarded the Joint Service Achievement Medal as a member of the Mapping Transition Team. His work significantly reduced the warehouse footprint by more than 12,500 square feet and produced an operations savings of more than $70,000 annually.
Royal led several professional training program topics for 35 Sailors, in preparation for the Navy-wide advancement examination. “His proactive approach, mentorship and ‘Sailorization’ resulted in the promotion of five of his Shipmates,” said Johnson.
Outside of working hours, Royal contributed more than 120 hours of time with the CPO Association to perform various community projects and outreach programs in the Kanagawa Prefecture. “Chief Royal’s participation definitely helped in promoting peaceful relationships with Japanese communities,” said Johnson.
“Chief Royal’s integrity, commitment and dedication to service have significantly contributed to DLA’s logistics mission readiness, while providing unprecedented logistical combat support to all units,” concluded Johnson.
