Navy Lt. Tu Luong, safety and health manager at Defense Logistics Agency Distribution San Joaquin, Calif., has been awarded the Distribution Company Grade Officer of the Quarter for second quarter, fiscal year 2016.

As the safety and health manager, Luong leads a team of civilian employees to include six safety professionals and four Voluntary Protection Program representatives in continuous efforts of training, promoting, and ensuring safety remains a core value to every employee of DLA San Joaquin.

According to site commander Marine Col. Keith Reventlow, Luong enabled her team, as well as management and other employees, to constantly strive to effectively communicate and foster a safety culture resulting in an impressive 34 percent reduction of OSHA recordable mishaps and 12 percent reduction of total mishaps in calendar year 2015 from the previous year.

She is also responsible for ensuring the command is in compliance on all safety and occupational health standards, regulations, practices, and procedures to eliminate and control potential hazards, and VPP requirements and goals.

Under her purview, the safety office staff successfully completed in-depth research and analysis of employees’ safety concerns and complaints, and thoroughly investigated and implemented correction actions to reduce 60 near-misses and unsafe conditions thus far in FY16.

She was essential in the planning and coordination of a Safety Stand-down for all DLA employees at San Joaquin, said Reventlow.  The event helped spread the commander’s core value of safety to over 2,000 DLA employees.

In her personal time, she volunteers with local animal rescue agencies, aiding in the adoption of dogs.  Additionally, she participated in the Hellyer 10K run and Rock & Roll Half Marathon in San Fransisco.

“Lt. Luong possesses mature leadership coupled with self-awareness and emotional intelligence to revitalize the culture of the safety office with positive encouragement and cooperative teamwork, streamline operations, and continually enhance the safety officer staff’s overall performance,” said Reventlow.
