San Diego distribution center welcomes new commander

United States Navy Capt. Jerome R. White assumed command of Defense Logistics Agency Distribution San Diego, California, on May 12 with a traditional Navy ceremony officiated by DLA Distribution commanding general Army. Brig. Gen. John S. Laskodi.

A native of Charleston, South Carolina, White enlisted in the Navy in 1988 and entered recruit training at Recruit Training Command, San Diego, California, where he was named the honor graduate of his recruit company.

White graduated in 1993 from The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.  He holds a Master of Business Administration from The George Washington University, a Master of Military Arts and Science from U. S. Army Command and General Staff College and a master’s degree in National Resource Strategy from The Industrial College of the Armed Forces.  He completed the Defense Acquisition University’s Senior Acquisition Course and Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School Senior Executive Education Program.

White’s first afloat tour was as a division officer onboard the amphibious assault ship USS Guam (LPH 9).  His other afloat tours include supply officer and department head onboard the strike missile destroyer USS Stump (DD 978) and the amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2).

Furthermore, White’s shore tours include a joint assignment as head of contracts and purchasing and contracting officer on the staff of Supreme Allied Commander, Atlantic.  Following an assignment as a student at The George Washington University, he was assigned as an integrated weapons system officer on the staff of Commander, Naval Inventory Control Point, Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. 

While at NAVICP, White deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom to Baghdad, Iraq, as chief of Plans and Programs and Contingency Contracting officer on the Staff of the Joint Contracting Command – Iraq/Afghanistan, Principle Assistant Responsible for Contracting – Forces.  He also served as deputy, Logistics Future Operations and chief, Logistics Future Operations Planner on the staff of Commander, U. S. Pacific Fleet in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.  In his latest assignment on the staff of Commander, Naval Supply Systems Command in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, he served as director, Supply Chain Management and director of Logistics.

White’s personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Volunteer Service Medal and various other unit and campaign awards.  He is a member of the Acquisition Professional Community and a Joint Qualified Officer.
