Distribution headquarters celebrates the 242nd Army birthday

By DLA Distribution Public Affairs DLA Distribution Public Affairs

In a ceremony held in the DLA Distribution Headquarters auditorium, senior leaders, military members and civilian staff celebrated the U.S. Army’s 242nd Birthday on June 14, 2017.  Distribution’s chief of staff, Perry Knight spoke about the significance and history of the day.

“Today we pause to remember the soldiers who have fought in every war or engagement on every continent, since our fight for independence in 1775 and to recognize those who now serve and have given another year of sacrifice and service to our country,” said Knight.

On June 14, 1775, Congress adopted the American Continental Army, raising 10 companies of riflemen, approving an enlistment form, and appointing a committee to draft rules and regulations. The following day, George Washington was unanimously chosen as the commander of all continental forces.

With several distribution centers co-located with Army customers, DLA Distribution provides the right things, at the right place, at the right time to Army customers. DLA Distribution Anniston, Ala., DLA Distribution Corpus Christi, Texas, DLA Distribution Tobyhanna, Pa. and DLA Distribution Red River, Texas, are all collocated with Army, with a total of 118,000 national stock numbers, $35 billion in inventory and 690,000 lines received/issued at these collocated sites.

“The essence of America’s Army then as now remains, sacrifice, courage, duty and character – achieving victory and protecting our Nation,” said Knight. “I am confident these will persevere. In 1775 they were our roots, tomorrow they will be our legacy.”
