DLA Distribution Susquehanna welcomes new installation senior enlisted advisor

By Brian Sipp DLA Distribution Public Affairs

U.S. Marine Corps Master Sgt. Bryan J. Alberts, relinquished responsibility as Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) Distribution, Susquehanna, Pennsylvania. Installation Senior Enlisted Advisor and 1st Sgt., to U.S. Army 1st Sgt. Maximo Nunez, during a change of responsibility ceremony here Aug. 15.

U.S. Army Col. Brad J. Eungard, commander of DLA Distribution Susquehanna, Pa., officiated the ceremony and keyed the passing of the colors by accepting the unit guidon from Alberts before passing it on to Nunez, demonstrating the continuity of leadership and formalizing the transfer of authority.

“All of us who have served in uniform have learned to respect and trust the outstanding men and women who wear the chevrons, anchors, and stripes of our noncommissioned officer and petty officer corps.  Our NCOs carry the torch of our Profession of Arms,” Eungard said.

Nunez, a Bronx, N.Y., native, who was raised in Santiago, Dominican Republic, entered the United States Army on Aug. 2, 2005. He is a current member of the prestigious U.S. Army Forces Command (FORSCOM) Sergeant Audie Murphy Club and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom 06-08.  His most recent assignment was serving as the Brigade Senior Drill Sergeant, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 194th Armored Brigade, Fort Benning, Ga., before being selected for his current position.

“First Sgt. Nunez, coming to us right off the trail as a Drill Sergeant, welcome to the DDSP (Defense Distribution Susquehanna Pennsylvania) family,” added Eungard.  “You have already earned our respect; and I am already at ease knowing I have another outstanding NCO to serve as our standard bearer for our Profession.  I am greatly blessed to have such a strong team of leaders who truly care about those in their charge.  I look forward to seeing how you will improve the quality of life here while also making meaningful investments in the lives of our teammates.”

While Nunez looks forward to his new duties and responsibilities for the care of all military members and civilians under his charge, the transition period for Alberts will be a familiar return to the duties and challenges in supply and logistics that he has excelled at during his career.

Alberts, who arrived to Susquehanna in June 2016 for duty as the Joint Support Operations Senior Noncommissioned Officer-in-Charge (SNCOIC), was asked in April 2017 by his leadership to temporarily fill a vacancy and assume responsibility as the Defense Distribution Susquehanna Installation Senior Enlisted Advisor.

While the DDSP Senior Enlisted Advisor position is coded as a U.S. Army billet, there were no U.S. Army NCOs at DDSP who were qualified or available to assume the post at that time.

Without hesitation, Alberts immediately volunteered to serve as needed, for as long as needed.  Exemplifying selfless service, this act was not lost on Eungard who thanked him for his time as a first sergeant during the past four months.

“It has been an absolute pleasure working with you to establish our Culture Teams and provide a positive means to engage our employees and seek out ways to provide better care for them, said Eungard. “Thank you for setting up the teams, for building the charter that will provide the structure and battle rhythm to keep the momentum going, and for your background work to collect all issues and begin to work these [issues] with Mr. David Wood and our People and Culture Team.  You are a true example of our great NCO Corps and a true caretaker of our Profession of Arms.  I’m very thankful that I am not losing you,” added Eungard.

Alberts is scheduled to return to his original position as Joint Support Operations Senior Noncommissioned Officer-in-Charge (SNCOIC) at the DLA Distribution Center, Susquehanna, Pennsylvania.
