DLA CENTCOM & SOCOM commander visits Distribution headquarters

By DLA Distribution Public Affairs

Army Col. Archie S. Herndon Jr., commander of DLA Central Command and Special Operations Command, visited DLA Distribution headquarters Nov. 7 for an overview of DLA Distribution, and a tour of DLA Distribution Susquehanna’s Eastern Distribution Center, the largest storage facility in the Department of Defense.

After an office call with Distribution chief of staff Perry Knight, Herndon met with key Distribution staff to receive an organizational overview highlighting DLA Distribution’s global reach extending to over 50 locations aligned across 20 states, eight countries, and all Combatant Commands, with particular focus on gaining an understanding of Distribution’s mission.

Furthermore, he had a specific interest in forward stock positioning and determining if Distribution had any issues or concerns in his region that he may assist with.  Scott Rosbaugh, director of DLA Distribution Future Plans described Herndon as “DLA Distribution’s regional face to the customers.”

While explaining forward stock positioning, Rosbaugh, clarified it is done through our enterprise business system. “We often send out materials six months in advance to makes sure supplies and equipment are where they need to be.”

Rosbaugh also highlighted the organization’s flexible support. “By utilizing our Expeditionary Team, we can be there when we need to be, but we’re good stewards of taxpayers’ dollars and can get out quickly and efficiently when the mission is complete.”

“The strength of this organization has always been our ability to get everyone together to do parallel planning. A perfect example of this is the sheer volume of the hurricane support and what it took to make that happen,” concluded Knight.

Following the discussion, DLA Distribution Susquehanna commander, Army Col. Brad J. Eungard provided Herndon with a tour of the installation’s Eastern Distribution Center, the largest distribution processing facility in DoD, handling 25 percent of DLA Distribution’s total receipt, storage, and issue of materiel worldwide.

Herndon took command as the new DLA CENTCOM & SOCOM commander during a July 7 change-of-command ceremony at CENTCOM headquarters, MacDill Air Force Base, Florida.
