OSD Logistics Fellows visit DLA Distribution

By Diana Dawa DLA Distribution Public Affairs

The Office of the Secretary of Defense Logistic Fellows visited DLA Distribution Susquehanna, Pennsylvania, Jan. 11, to learn about DLA’s global logistics processes and operations.

Scott Rosbaugh, director of strategic plans at DLA Distribution headquarters, gave a presentation which highlighted DLA Distribution’s worldwide network and displayed special functions the command provides - such as kitting and hazardous material handling - and detailed transportation coordination that the organization provides for all of DLA.

Upon completion of the presentation discussion, the seven member group received a walking tour of DLA Distribution Susquehanna’s Eastern Distribution Center, the largest warehouse in the Department of Defense.

The group toured the receiving, processing, storage, retrieval and out loading operations, where they saw the distribution supply chain in action.  The walk-about also included the warehouse’s key locations, including the Consolidation and Containerization Point, the high-rise storage and retrieval system, and the air line of communication pallet build area.

The visit’s purpose allowed the Fellows an in-depth orientation to DLA’s Distribution Operations and gave them an idea of how logistics distribution flows on a global scale.

Class leader Kathy Oliphant thought the brief and the tour was very good and well worth the trip.  “It gives you a strategic view of DLA. Most of us have heard of DLA, and worked with DLA before, but when you come here and you see in real time what they do, it just brings everything into fruition.”

The OSD Logistics Fellows Program is open to field grade officer and DOD civilian equivalent logisticians. This one-year, unit funded “fellowship” is a developmental assignment, with a goal to provide an atmosphere that fosters learning, growth, and experiential opportunities. The program is administered by the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for logistics and materiel readiness.
