Army Maj. Gen. Flem B. "Donnie" Walker Jr. Visits Defense Logistics Agency Bahrain, Southwest Asia

Army Maj. Gen. Flem B. "Donnie" Walker Jr., commanding general, 1st Sustainment Command (Theater) and deputy commanding general‐ Sustainment for United States Army Central, visited Defense Logistics Agency Distribution Bahrain, Southwest Asia on Feb. 27. DLA Distribution Bahrain Commander, Navy Cmdr. Charles Tellis and his leadership team provided a command brief and a tour of the facilities.

Emphasizing the importance of integrating DLA and Army consumable inventories, Walker expressed that he would like to see more Army items stored at the distribution center and asked Tellis to work in concert with the 1st Sustainment Command SPO to identify the frequency and volume of Army managed Class IX items that pass through DLA Distribution Bahrain in support of Army units operating in Kuwait and Iraq. 

DLA Distribution Bahrain, Southwest Asia, maintains forward-positioned stock and provides multi-modal distribution services to U.S. Naval Forces Central Command and Combined Maritime Forces operating in the Fifth Fleet Area of Responsibility. Located in Bahrain’s capital city, Manama, the distribution center performs standard distribution operations to include receipt, store, ship, and issue as well as inventory control, care of stock in storage, packaging, and preservation. Additionally, as a part of this mission, DLA Distribution Bahrain, Southwest Asia provides tailored distribution services through its Material Processing Center. The MPC, functional since June 2009, performs the following core business functions on fleet requisitioned materiel: receiving; customized sorting; temporary storage; customized delivery options; expedited shipment tracking; and freight forwarding functions. New missions include General Services Administration and Navy-owned material. Materiel in storage includes clothing, housekeeping supplies, petroleum products, construction materials, repair parts and component items, mapping products, and ballistic missile defense ship parts. DLA Distribution Bahrain, Southwest Asia’s primary customers include home-ported and visiting ships.
