Distribution Commander's 4th of July Safety Message

DLA Distribution Public Affairs

Distribution Teammates,

This Fourth of July marks the 242nd anniversary of our nation’s birth, the day when brave and dedicated patriots, representatives of the 13 colonies then fighting in the revolutionary struggle, signed a resolution that would declare independence of the United States from Great Britain and founded a nation based on freedom. From that day to this, the world has never been the same…but America continues to stand for freedom.

So, on the Fourth of July, we mark more than the nation’s birthday…we celebrate our rights to liberty and life, and we honor all those who, over the centuries, have been willing to fight and die to keep our country free.  We are forever grateful for our right to think, speak and worship freely. We are humbled in remembering the many courageous men and women who preserve, protect, and expand these liberties. And I thank you for what you do every day to support our Warfighters.

Like many of you, I hope to spend part of this holiday celebrating our nation’s birthday with family and friends. The Fourth of July just doesn’t seem complete without picnics, parades, and fireworks. However, drinking and driving, fatigue, excessive speed, and failure to wear seatbelts continue to be a significant threat to our personnel.  I challenge each of you to do your part in preventing mishaps.  Personal responsibility is the key foundation for safety and begins with each and every one of you.   Get involved, emphasize safety, and lead by example.   Please exercise extreme caution if fireworks are authorized in your communities; otherwise, help keep your community safe by reporting unauthorized use to your local authorities.  Water sports are enjoyable and people often don’t think about the risks involved.  Please ensure everyone follows basic safety measures; wear a life jacket, watch the weather and let someone know where you’re going.  Lastly, excessive exposure to the sun can be dangerous; protect your skin, wear sunscreen, and stay hydrated.

Claire joins me in sending our best wishes for a safe and joyous Independence Day. This is a special holiday and you are a valuable member of our DLA Team!  Enjoy your families and friends; celebrate smartly and return safely.

May God bless you and may God continue to bless America and its Allies.
