Third quarter military recognition

By Connie Braesch DLA Energy Public Affairs

Three Defense Logistics Agency Energy employees were recognized for their achievements to the organization’s mission and Warfighter support.

Army Capt. Theodore Yost, Air Force Master Sgt. Jason Karras and Air Force Tech. Sgt. Lynell McLeod received Military Officer of the Quarter awards for the period of April through June 2019.

Company Grade Officer of the Quarter:
Army Capt. Theodore Yost, DLA Energy Hawaii operations officer, provided direct support to U.S. Indo-Pacific Command joint and multinational theater engagements. As the DLA lead in country for the Balikatan 2019, he coordinated and executed exercise support for humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, counter-terrorism, and the combined military operations between the U.S. and the Philippines. His efforts also ensured seamless support to the Warfighter during Pacific Sentry 19-2 and 19-3, strategically developing tanker slates for resupply and analyzing service component fuel models to satisfy emerging requirements.

To highlight the DLA Energy Hawaii region capabilities, Yost created several products including the Eastern Pacific Region Smart Book, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam Fact Sheet, and an in-depth analysis of JBPHH JP5 bulk fuel distribution. Additionally, he managed a 163 million gallon inventory management plan supporting four services and a $50 million ground fuels contract supporting 32 customers across 44 locations throughout the region.

Senior Non-Commissioned Officer of the Quarter:
Air Force Master Sgt. Jason Karras is serving in the Logistics Education Advancement Program senior NCO position working with multiple DLA Energy business units to gain knowledge of how DLA operates and how DLA and the Air Force can work better together.

During the third quarter, Karras worked in the DLA Energy Quality and Installation Management for Energy directorates. While assigned to the Quality directorate, Karras rewrote the testing requirements outlined in Military Standard 3004-1, the Department Of Defense Standard Practice for Quality Assurance/Surveillance for Bulk Fuels, Lubricants and Related Products. He coordinated hundreds of changes with each military Service Control Point and regional quality manager working to provide a new approach to quality assurance for the nation’s Warfighters. He presented the new format and changes to the Tri-Service and DLA Energy Review board during the semi-annual Quality Managers Conference, receiving the board’s full acceptance. While assigned to Installation Management for Energy, Karras shadowed the director and provided Air Force subject matter expertise support to the Environmental and Real Property branches.

Junior Non-Commissioned Officer of the Quarter:
Air Force Tech. Sgt. Lynell McLeod is a quality assurance representative for DLA Energy Americas at Houston, Texas. As a member of the Southeast Quality Team he provided quality control and surveillance throughout Florida and the Caribbean regions. He also served as the DLA Energy point of contact at Defense Fuel Support Point Tampa, Florida. During the third quarter, McLeod issued more than 6.2 million gallons of jet fuel and managed 20 contracts with an award value of more than $90 million supporting multiple customers and strengthening relationships throughout the area of responsibility.

DLA Energy winners will move on to compete with other DLA personnel for DLA 3rd Quarter Military Awards.
