RICHMOND, VA –
Maurice Sanabria, chief, Defense Logistics Agency Aviation’s Command Support Directorate’s Command Programs Office was bestowed the Excellence in Service Award for 2019 by the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) for his accomplishments in the advancement of diversity/inclusion and for his work in the community
He received the award during the organization’s 90th Annual Convention and Exposition held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, July 9-13.
The award recognizes excellence in public service in the advancement of education, economic, health, and diversity accomplishments of Department of Defense civilian employees and military veterans in government service, who are Hispanics that have supported the DLA’s mission, whose attributes best epitomized the qualities and core values of their respective federal/military service and promoted a positive image of those in uniform.
Kathie Rowland, deputy chief of staff, DLA Aviation, nominated Sanabria for serving as the Command Support Directorate representative on DLA Aviation’s Special Emphasis Program Committee. In the nomination, she stated Sanabria provided input to SEPC on possible solutions, programs and activities that contribute to the recruitment, promotion and retention of employees from special emphasis groups. He also planned and executed activities in support of special observances, including Hispanic Heritage Month and Holocaust Remembrance Day.
The award also recognized Sanabria for his tireless humanitarian efforts after Hurricane Maria, a deadly category 5 hurricane, devastated Puerto Rico, leaving those living there without electricity, water, telecommunications or transportation systems.
Mr. Sanabria was also recognized for his work in promoting Puerto Rican musical traditions through workshops in Greater Richmond public schools.
