DLA Aviation employees remember 9/11: Trina Bembry

By DLA Aviation Public Affairs Office

In commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, the Defense Logistics Agency Aviation Public Affairs Office is running a week-long series Sept. 6-11 sharing the stories of DLA Aviation employees who remember where they were and what they were doing that fateful day.

Name:  Trina Bembry

Organization: DLA Aviation at Jacksonville, Florida

What is your job title, and what do you do, specifically? In my position as a sustainment specialist, it’s my job to keep in close communication with our customers at Fleet Readiness Center Southeast to maintain the best inventory availability and evaluate increases or decreases and trends in their ordering.

Please tell where you were and what you were doing on Sept. 11, 2001. Shortly before 9 a.m., myself and some of my coworkers at Naval Station Mayport, Florida, were in the breakroom watching television as the news reports started coming in announcing that an aircraft, later identified as American Airlines Flight 11, had flown into the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

A short time later, we watched as the second aircraft, United Airlines flight 175, hit the South Tower. We later learned that both planes had been hijacked by terrorists. This is how I remember that sad day.

What can we do to ensure future generations never forget that fateful day? To help ensure future generations never forget this tragic event, we need to produce film documentaries and include the subject in educational learning plans.
