DLA Distribution Commanding General's Disability Awareness Month message

By DLA Distribution Public Affairs

National Disability Employment Awareness Month is observed during the month of October. The month-long observation is so Americans may reaffirm their commitment to ensuring equal opportunity for all citizens and to pay tribute to the accomplishments of men and women with disabilities who contribute to making the nation's economy strong.

The theme of this year’s awareness month is America’s Recovery, Powered by Inclusion. Jennifer Sheehy, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Labor for Disability Employment Policy, explained the theme as “reflecting our commitment to an inclusive recovery, one in which those of us with disabilities have full access to economic opportunity and, if needed, the accommodations and support that allow us to contribute our skills and talents.”

National Disability Employment Awareness Month is also an opportunity to reaffirm DoD’s commitment to recruit, retain, and advance individuals with disabilities throughout our workforce. People with disabilities span across age, ethnicity, sex, race, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status. It is a group anyone can become a member of at any time. As the Federal Government’s largest employer, DoD recognizes its critical role in advancing disability awareness in the workplace. The DoD understands that we are all equally important in protecting our nation and that we all have a role to play in mission readiness.

DLA Distribution employs many hard working, talented employees with disabilities. This month, as we recognize the talent and skill of these employees, I’d like to acknowledge and thank the Americans with disabilities who work for DLA Distribution. Their resolve and determination strengthen our country and inspire us all.

The DoD has an ongoing commitment to an inclusive Total Force, where qualified men and women of all walks of life can pursue their full potential. Together, we will continue to advance and promote an inclusive workforce in which everyone can provide for themselves and their families. Their achievements not only strengthen our economy and communities but also exemplify the power of every American to help shape the future of our country.
