DLA Distribution Commanding General delivers Veterans Day remarks

By DLA Distribution Public Affairs

The theme for Veterans Day 2021, “Honoring All Who Served,” is centered on the centennial commemoration of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which was dedicated on Armistice Day, November 11, 1921, with the burial of an unknown World War I service member. In the aftermath of WWII and the Korean War, Armistice Day became Veterans Day, a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

In the words of the late soldier, statesman and patriot, Army General Colin Powell, “The nation owes a great debt to its veterans, whose service to the nation spans every decade, every year, every day of our country's existence. Through untold courage and sacrifice, America’s veterans have secured the liberty which the founding fathers sought to establish here in the new world. Whenever and wherever the nation has called -- in times of darkness and danger as well as in times of peace and prosperity -- America's veterans have been there. Veterans have proudly carried the torch of liberty for all to see.”

In Distribution, we have over 2,600 teammates who are either veterans, active-duty service members, guardsmen or reservists still serving this country with courage and sacrifice. It’s an honor and a privilege to serve alongside all of you. I ask you all to pause this Veterans Day to remember the significance of the sacrifices made by our veterans and those from generations past who carried the torch of liberty. Thank you for your service, your resiliency, the many ways you continue to serve your communities and our nation, and your continued commitment to the DLA mission. A special thank you to the families of veterans for what you do – we couldn’t do what we do without you. You, too, have served your country well.

I also want to thank the entire DLA Distribution team for your work ethic and patriotism, as we continue to successfully support the warfighter while also supporting our whole-of-government partners, including our veterans, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Mr. Knight and I truly appreciate all that you do. Your hard work, dedication and commitment have contributed to the success of DLA distribution and the entire Department of Defense. I encourage you to take advantage of this Veterans Day– enjoy a well-deserved day of rest, stay safe and remember to personally thank a veteran for their service! While many Veterans Day events were postponed last year, if you choose to gather for parades, ceremonies, or gatherings with family and friends, please make sure you follow local COVID-19 precautions to keep everyone safe.
