J6 Employee Spotlight - Jim Moffett

By J6 Communications

Name: Jim Moffett

Organization: Enterprise Capabilities & Process Management (J6TB)

Years of Service: 37 and I will be retiring soon!

What is your job title, and what do you do, specifically?

At the present time, I perform the duties of the J6 policy manager and statement of assurance coordinator.

What is your background, including experience and credentials? How does your background help you be successful in your current role?

My background is diverse. I performed the roles of a Marine radio operator, design draftsman, bartender, metal fabricator, and production welder prior to joining DLA. As a member of DLA, I performed the functions of a voucher examiner, management analyst, emergency planner, web designer, process improvement specialist, and others, becoming certified in Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) Version 3. However, I believe my most valuable experience with DLA was working in the Logistics Readiness Center during Desert Shield and Desert Storm as an emergency planner, since it was an opportunity to support DLA’s mission firsthand. As for success, I refer to things I learned in the Marines, such as learning to work with people from different backgrounds and opinions but trying always to focus on mission first. In my opinion, I’ve had the luxury of working with good people in all my roles, so a lot of my success doesn’t really belong to me. I also tried to implement the leadership skills and concepts I learned in Non-Commissioned Officer school, remembering statements like “If you make decisions based on personal gain, you are making the wrong decision,” “Do the right thing, even if no one is watching,” and “As a leader, your primary job is to teach and learn from others” to keep me on course.

What aspect(s) of your current job gives you the most personal satisfaction?  Why?

I get a lot of personal satisfaction from working with others and hearing their views. I find getting to know others and their perspectives interesting.

What are some of your passions outside of work?

Outside of work, spending time with family and friends is most important. Having two sons and becoming a grandfather to a granddaughter has been a real lifechanging experience. Other than family and friends, I have become an avid fly fisherman. I find fly fishing, fly-tying, building fly rods, and being outdoors cathartic. As the saying goes, “Trout don’t live in ugly places.” Combining my hobby with service, I became involved in Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing and started teaching beginning fly-tying to other veterans.

What advice do you have for DLA employees?

My advice is to read! I try to read at least an hour a day. I have always found new ideas from reading, even from subjects unrelated to what I was working on. Reading is the most important time I now share with my granddaughter, and we read every night before she goes to bed when I visit.
