By Irene Smith DLA Energy Public Affairs

Leadership, service, dedication to duty. These words capture the selfless service of Broderick’s 42-year military and federal service career that elevated him into the DLA Energy Hall of Fame.

Broderick retired in 2015 as the director, Business Process Support Directorate. Through his 12 years with DLA Energy, he led the agency through some of its most challenging projects, notably the Enterprise Business System and Energy Convergence projects. He played a critical role in moving the DLA Energy supply chain into the DLA Business Systems Modernization Enterprise, aligning energy commodities to the processes and systems that support other DLA supply chains. Through his expert leadership and in-depth knowledge of the DLA Energy supply chain, he preserved processes and systems that were unique to petroleum.

We asked Broderick a few questions about his induction into the Hall of Fame.

1. What does it mean to you to receive this honor?

I spent 42 years in federal service – 30 years in the Air Force and 12 years as a civil servant. I spent 17 of those 42 years with DLA Energy. This Hall of Fame recognition means I did provide some amount of leadership, service, dedication to duty, and contributions to the DLA Energy and DLA mission. To me, that means service before self and a true appreciation to be part of such a distinguished group of members.

2. What is your best memory of your time working at DLA Energy?

Many great memories but almost impossible to name the best.

We stood up the Energy Convergence Office in 2017, followed by a total reorganization of DLA Energy to fit the DLA Business Service model.  That created the Business Process Support Directorate. The Energy Convergence office evolved bringing in a much-needed procurement solution as well as auditability focus. It was a proud moment for many when EC ended, and DLA Energy was fully in the DLA Enterprise Business System in 2014.

3. Do you have one thing you are most proud of from your career?

I was a proud member of DLA Energy for 17 years, but seven of those years were in executing the Energy Convergence mission. I wanted to retire earlier than I did, but I wanted to see EC to fruition more. Working to see EC fully reach completion after seven plus years of hard work, sacrifice and 60-hour work weeks was a very proud moment for myself and many others. In 2014, EC was mostly complete and DLA Energy fully moved to DLA Enterprise Business System. By 2015, six different legacy systems were decommissioned.

4. Is there anyone you’d like to thank?

A big thank you to all those I worked with over 17 years at DLA Energy. I would like to also thank all those who were directly part of EC – DLA Energy, J6 and J8, and contractors – but especially the original core members of the Energy Convergence Office. This was deemed a high-risk, low-reward activity that many in DLA Energy saw no need for. For these people to lend their support to that mission is something I will be eternally grateful for.

The DLA Energy Hall of Fame was established to honor and preserve the memory of past associates for their exceptional leadership, service, dedication to duty and contributions in supporting the DLA mission.
