ILOG students visit DLA Distribution Susquehanna

By DLA Distribution Public Affairs DLA Distribution Public Affairs

Army Logistics University Intern Logistics Studies students visited Defense Logistics Agency Distribution Susquehanna, Pa., May 13 to learn about DLA’s global distribution network and tour the Department of Defense’s largest distribution facility.

Starting the day, DLA Distribution commander Brig. Gen. Richard Dix presented ALU course instructor Lee Holland with a coin for his years of support towards America’s logisticians.  The students then received a command overview highlighting DLA’s global distribution network of 24 distribution centers, as well as supply chain stock replenishment, customer demand patterns, and coordination of transportation for customer deliveries.

Following the overview, the group was guided through the Eastern Distribution Center, DoD’s largest distribution operation under one roof.  Attendees visited key areas including receiving operations for mission receipts and field returns, dedicated truck lanes serving continental U.S. and outside the continental U.S. customers with time-definite deliveries, and the Theater Consolidation and Shipping Point, where materiel is consolidated into loads destined to OCONUS customers through the use of seavan containers.

DLA Distribution has hosted Army interns since 2003 with a goal of providing newly-recruited Army civilian interns, as well as interns nearing completion of their 18-month internship, with a clear understanding of DLA and the world of physical distribution supporting America’s warfighter.
