Puget Sound’s Taasaas named Employee of the Quarter

By Emily Tsambiras DLA Distribution Public Affairs

Doug Taasaas, inventory management specialist at DLA Distribution Puget Sound, Wash., has been named Employee of the Quarter for the third quarter of fiscal year 2015.

According to Distribution Puget Sound’s commander, Navy Cmdr. Mark Peace, Taasaas has made an exceptional impact on the inventory integrity and management of Navy Working Capital Fund material, contributing significantly to overall warfighter readiness.

Considered as the Inventory Accuracy Team technical expert, in 2014 Taasaas validated six location audits and spot inventories on over 6,250 line items valued in excess of $5.5 million with an average inventory accuracy rate of 99 percent.  He also managed the daily operations and 17 schedule inventories for the organization’s Bangor site, which resulted in a 100 percent completion rate and was completed ahead of schedule.

Taasaas used his extensive knowledge of the Enterprise Resource Planning system, the Navy’s financial system of record, and volunteered to facilitate and teach Physical Inventory Management Instructor-Led Training modules to more than 25 Distribution Puget Sound and Fleet Logistics Center Puget Sound employees.  The result expedited employee ERP access by more than 30 days.

Peace says Taasaas is a “process improvement advocate” and implemented best business practices by creating a bar code that identifies unit of issues, plant type and categories for issuable materiel not recognized by the ERP scanner.  “Mr. Taasaas reduced the inventory physical count process by 25 percent.  Additionally, he developed three ERP Standard Operating Procedures that streamlined inventory processes and improved inventory efficiency rate by 98 percent,” said Peace.

When not at work, Taasaas is an active community servant.  He volunteered over 60 hours as financial custodian, secretary, and supply clerk for Christ the King Lutheran Church and School in Bremerton, Wash.  He collected and deposited all monies donated to the church, tracked online contributions, prepared financial statements, and managed the congregation’s consumable supply requirements that saved the church approximately $35,000 per year in salaries.

“Mr. Taasaas is a dedicated, loyal and dependable employee with a phenomenal work ethic.  He takes ownership, accountability and pride in everything he does.  His unselfish devotion to duty is exemplary and infectious among other employees,” said Peace.
