Anniston’s Adderhold wins Global Distribution Excellence: Safety Civilian of the Year

By Jessica Roman DLA Distribution Public Affairs

Barry Adderhold, safety management specialist at Defense Logistics Agency Distribution Anniston, Ala., has been awarded the Global Distribution Excellence: Safety Civilian of the Year award for leading the Anniston team to achieving ISO 14001:2004, an Environmental Management System audit.

Major components of this audit were officially noted as Best in Class Operations for All Branches of the Federal Government.  ISO 14001 sets out the criteria for an environmental management system that provides assurance to Agency management, employees, and stakeholders that environmental impact is being measured and improved.  DLA Distribution Anniston is the only DLA activity, and one of only 30 organizations within the federal government, to be recognized as ISO 14001 certified.

Adderhold is leading the charge for the organization’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration Voluntary Protection Program Challenge, which sets conditions for a safe and healthy working environment free from hazards.  He developed and oversees the steering committee that developed the breakout plan for each objective within the challenge.

“Mr. Adderhold’s leadership continues to ensure that our OSHA training at the 30-hour and 10-hour levels results in 100 percent certification for all Anniston employees,” said Army Lt. Col. Hattie Richardson, the distribution center’s commander.  “This comprehensive effort is one of a kind within DLA Distribution.”

Adderhold’s plan to ensure compliance in the issuing, storage, distribution and disposition for all chemicals handled by DLA Distribution Anniston was recognized by the ISO 14001 auditor as Best in Federal Government.  His plan was also used by Anniston Army Depot Safety Office as a foundation in establishing the host installation program.

Adderhold also developed a comprehensive DLA Distribution Anniston safety regulation, which covers Anniston-specific operations and directly corresponds to Department of Defense and OSHA safety guidance.  “Through his leadership efforts, supporting quality and productive, we were able to set the foundation for Audit Readiness and new business at our location,” said Richardson.
