DLA Distribution Commander Army Brig. Gen Richard Dix addresses culinary institute on Veterans Day

By Dawn Bonsell DLA Distribution Public Affairs

United States Army Brig. Gen. Richard B. Dix addressed a crowd at the Culinary Institute of America’s Veterans Day celebration in Hyde Park, N.Y. In his opening remarks, Dix described to the audience of students, teachers, and family members, the importance of Veterans Day as a day set aside to thank and honor all those who served honorably in the military. “In fact,” stated Dix, “Veterans Day is largely intended to thank our living veterans for their service, to acknowledge that their contributions to our national security are appreciated, and to emphasize the fact that all those who served have sacrificed and done their duty.” He went on to give a special thank you to the Vietnam veterans and added that he is humbled to follow in their footsteps.

“Just as liberty, freedom and peace are not ideas we can take for granted, neither can we take our individual or common safety for granted. Liberty and safety can only be achieved through constant awareness and the willingness to keep and maintain them,” said Dix.  It is with that thought in mind that Dix believes Francis Scott Key ended the last stanza of the “Star Spangled Banner” with a question mark. “O’re the land of the free and the home of the brave?”

Dix concluded his remarks by reminding the audience, “Our veterans fought so our children won’t have to, so that the next generation, here and around the world, will realize a more hopeful life on this Earth.”

The Culinary Institute of America (CIA) is the premier culinary college in the United States. In addition to its main campus in Hyde Park, N.Y., the college has branch campuses in St. Helena, Calif., San Antonio, Texas, and Singapore. Veterans Day is a particularly special holiday at CIA as veterans from all branches of the military enhance their student body and bring much-valued diversity and life experience to the campus.
