Distribution Master Sergeant selected for USASMA

Army Master Sgt. Michael Clayton has been selected to attend the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy at Ft. Bliss, Texas.

Currently serving as DLA Distribution Current Operations Executive Officer, Clayton will be promoted to the rank of Sergeant Major after completing the 9-month long program which begins in the summer.

According to its website, the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy is acknowledged by military and civilian organizations as the world's premiere institution for the education of noncommissioned officers, and is accredited as an academic Institution of Excellence. The Sergeants Major Course provides Soldiers with an education that teaches them to enhance their character, self-expression and strengthen teamwork abilities.

Clayton has been with DLA Distribution since July 2015.  His previous duty assignments included: Material Storage and Handling Specialist, Material Accounting Noncommissioned officer, Production Control Noncommissioned Officer, Prescribed Load List Noncommissioned Officer and Battalion Motor Sergeant, Material Management Noncommissioned Officer in charge, Observer/Controller and Trainer, S-3 Noncommissioned Officer, Base Operations Noncommissioned Officer in charge, Operations Sergeant Major and First Sergeant.

A native of Atlanta, Ga., Clayton graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in June 1992 and entered the United States Army in June 1992.  He attended Basic Training at Fort Jackson, S.C. and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Lee, Va., where he was awarded the Military Occupational Specialty of 76V Material Storage and Handling Specialist.

Clayton’s stateside assignments include: 565 Repair Parts Co. (GS), Fort Hood, Texas; HHOC, 103rd Military Intelligence Battalion, Fort Stewart, Ga.; A. Co, 26th Brigade Support Battalion, Fort Stewart, Ga.; 191st Infantry BDE (Training Support), Fort Lewis, Wash.; 426th Brigade Support Battalion and 1st Special Troops Battalion, Fort Campbell, Ken.. His overseas assignments include: HHC/MMC DISCOM, 1st Infantry Division, Kitzengen, Germany and HHD, 509th Personnel Services Battalion, Camp Casey, Korea. His previous deployments were Operation Iraqi Freedom III from 2005 to 2006, Operation Enduring Freedom X from 2010 to 2011 and Operation Enduring Freedom XIII from 2012-2013.

His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal (2nd Award), the Meritorious Service Medal (2nd Award), the Army Commendation Medal (5th Award), the Army Achievement Medal (6th Award), the Army Good Conduct Medal (7th award), the National Defense Medal (w/bronze star), the Afghanistan Campaign Medal (with two bronze stars), the Iraqi Campaign Medal (with two bronze stars), the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Korean Defense Service Medal, the Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon (numeral 3), the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon (numeral 5) and the NATO Medal.  He has also been awarded the Combat Action Badge, the Air Assault Badge and the Drivers Badge.

His military education includes: the Primary Leadership Development Course (Commandant’s List), Grafenwoehr, Germany; Basic Noncommissioned Officer Course – 92A, Fort Lee, Va.; Advanced Noncommissioned Officer Course – 92A (Distinguished Honor Graduate), Fort Lee, Va.; the Combatives Level One Course and the Air Assault Course.

Clayton has an Associate’s Degree in Logistics Management from Coastline Community College and is pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Arts from Excelsior College.  He is also certified as a Demonstrated Senior Logistician.
