Norfolk’s chief of staff retires after 30 years of service

Navy Lt. Cmdr. Christopher S. Mayfield Sr., chief of staff at Defense Logistics Agency Distribution Norfolk, Va., officially retired on April 1 after 30 years of service to the Navy.  The ceremony was officiated by Navy Capt. Harry Thetford, commander of the distribution center.

Mayfield assumed the duties as the chief of staff on July 9, 2014.  He began his Navy career in 1986 when he enlisted as a storekeeper attending recruit training in Orlando, Fla.  He attended Storekeeper “A” school in Meridian, Miss.  He received his commission in April 2000 from the Navy’s Limited Duty Officer Program. 

Mayfield most recently held the position as supply director at Naval Special Warfare Development Group in Virginia Beach, Va.  He was previously enlisted from September 1986 until March 2000 as logistics specialist achieving the rank of chief petty officer.

Mayfield first served afloat as a storekeeper onboard USS Emory S. Land (AS 39), which deployed around the world in 1988.  Subsequent afloat assignments included the USS Saipan (LHA 2) as the financial storekeeper; the USS Carter Hall (LSD 50) as the leading storekeeper; the USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) as the sales officer; and the USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7) as the principal assistant for Services.

Previous shore assignments include Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit Two, Norfolk, Va.; supply officer of Naval ROTC Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y.; supply officer of Naval and Marine Corps Intelligence Training Center, Virginia Beach, Va.; and officer-in-charge priority material officer, Detachment Norfolk, Norfolk, Va.

Mayfield is qualified as an Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist; Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist; Surface Warfare Supply Corps Officer; and Naval Aviation Supply Officer. He is a graduate of the Naval War College (JPME 1).

Mayfield holds a Bachelor of Science in Management Studies from Excelsior College in Albany, N.Y. and a Master of Business Administration from Columbia Southern University in Orange Beach, Ala.  His personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (five awards), Presidential Unit Citation, and the Good Conduct Medal (three awards).
