Anniston’s Goodwin receives Global Distribution Excellence: Vehicle/MHE Management Civilian Manager of the Year

By Missy Wright DLA Distribution Public Affairs

Duane Goodwin, equipment specialist at Defense Logistics Agency Distribution Anniston, Ala., has been awarded the Global Distribution Excellence: Vehicle/MHE Management Civilian of the Year award for his outstanding performance maintaining material handling equipment (MHE).

Goodwin serves as the accountable property officer (APO) managing over 200 pieces of equipment valued at $66 million. As the APO, he identified and processed several pieces of excess equipment valued at $400,000, at the same time providing safety, security, quality, outstanding production and support for DLA Distribution Anniston.

According to deputy commander, Guy Taylor, “Goodwin’s knowledge and experience working with the DLA Distribution contracting office was influential in the organization receiving eight vital new MHE’s and other equipment ahead of schedule as it improved the morale, safety and welfare of the organization.”

“He was also instrumental in attaining a new overhead crane and repairing an additional one,” said Taylor. The overhead cranes are critical to the success of the Preservation, Packaging, Packing and Marking section. His continuing efforts to manage the organization’s MHE fleet has reduced the average age of the fleet to six years compared to the average 30 years.

Goodwin also serves as the contracting officer’s representative on the Pallet Rack and Transport Dock projects for the organization. The $1.2 million project replaced a 30-year unserviceable pallet rack with more modern racks. The organization’s storage capacity was greatly improved by the project allowing for optimization of storage locations.

Additionally, Goodwin coordinated the acquisition of an outside contractor to conduct a complete technical inspection and make repairs to the organization’s 80-ton Gantry Crane “Clyde.” His dedication and effort made a substantial impact to the performance of the division, while decreasing crane down-time. He established a permanent maintenance contract for $1.4 million for repairs to Clyde, and the use of a temporary crane as required.

“Mr. Goodwin is an invaluable asset to the organization.  His professional performance, industrious attitude, and devotion to duty are unsurpassed. He is a greatly reliable individual who promotes high morale and good will,” said Taylor.
