Fitness Center renovations set to begin

By Michael Molinaro DLA Land and Maritime

A full-scale renovation of both the men’s and women’s showers and restrooms are set to begin at the Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation’s Fitness Center on Defense Supply Center Columbus.

The six-month project will close some areas during construction but FMWR officials are positive that the facelift will be worth it.

“It’s an upgraded design, functionality and accessibility in the Men's and Women's showers and restrooms,” Jennifer Russell said. “The new modern facilities will include new layouts, upgraded tile and fixtures, women's infrared sauna, and an increased number of new private shower stalls.”

While the area is closed for the renovation, temporary showers and restrooms will be available for patrons to use. Locker rooms will still be accessible from the track entrances and additional short-term use lockers will be made available in temporary facilities.

Some of the changes being made are to make sure the facility complies with American with Disabilities Act requirements.

The Fitness Center’s last major upgrade was three years ago when the Functional Fitness Area was updated with new flooring, TRX Suspension Training, Kettle Bell training, Battle ropes and various equipment needed for Functional Training Area

“The upgrade went well and was well received by all,” Russell said.

More is on the way this year, Russell said. The Climate Controlled Cardio project will transform the current functional fitness area of the DSCC Fitness center into a user-friendly and climate controlled Cardio Supercenter.

The Cardio Supercenter will make working out safer, more comfortable and more enjoyable for our customers during hot summer months.  Plans are also underway for completion of a Sports and Wellness Park. This multi-use, environmentally friendly recreational park will offer space for intramural sports, fitness activities and community events.

Other upcoming MWR programs include the new Intramural Sports Program, the 2016 5K Series, and the return of their De-stress Express Program in 2016. Registration is currently open for the annual Max Meltdown Weight-loss Program.
