Harnitchek visits DLA personnel supporting Sandy recovery efforts
Defense Logistics Agency Director Navy Vice Adm. Mark Harnitchek spent Nov. 13 visiting DLA team members supporting Hurricane Sandy relief efforts in New Jersey and New York.
The admiral traveled by C-12 Huron turboprop aircraft to Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J. At the joint base he visited a generator yard, a staging site for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and officials from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
From there he visited a fuel farm nearby and met with DLA team members supporting joint Task Force-Civil Support.
He also met with Navy Rear Adm. Patricia Wolfe, acting director of DLA Troop Support who is heading up DLA’s efforts on the ground, and had a flyover of Fort Hamilton, N.Y., and U. S. Coast Guard Base Sandy Hook and Hoboken Terminal, in New Jersey, all areas heavily damaged in the late October super storm.
As of Nov. 14, DLA has shipped 6.2 million meals, 48 pallets of bottled water, 7.8 million gallons of fuel, 105 water pumps, 51 generators, 170,000 blankets, 4,000 cots, 500 sets of cold-weather clothing, 200 hypothermia prevention kits, and six portable X-ray machines to areas impacted by Hurricane Sandy. The agency has also assisted in hauling 30 million pounds of trash from affected areas.
