Farmers market starts summer service at McNamara Headquarters Complex
5/30/2013
By Jacob Boyer

McNamara Headquarters Complex employees got a little sunshine and bought a lot of produce as Defense Logistics Agency Headquarters kicked off its weekly farmers market May 29.

The farmer’s market, which will run 10 a.m.-2 p.m. every Wednesday through the summer, is part of DLA Headquarters’ participation in the Healthy Base Initiative, a Defense Department pilot program designed to fight against the rising occurrences of obesity and tobacco use among military service members and DoD civilian employees. DLA Headquarters is one of 13 demonstration sites for the program, which started May 15.

If you work in the headquarters, you know you see me in the gym a lot. I try to eat right, exercise. I would tell you, as you get older, exercising is the big thing to fend off the deleterious effects of old age. And I’m getting up there, so that’s the biggest thing. If you do nothing else, … workout, OK?” DLA Director Navy Vice Adm. Mark Harnitchek said about the importance of participating in the initiative at a May 21 Director’s Call.

The market started off as a resounding success for C&T Produce, the locally run and operated Virginia farm that provided a variety of fruits, vegetables and herbs for HQC employees to purchase. Within 30 minutes of the market’s opening, a C&T employee announced to a line of employees that stretched nearly across the building’s entrance that due to rapidly dwindling supplies, a second truck would deliver more produce at noon.

Jean Ellis, assistant executive officer to the director, said she had not planned to go to a farmers market when she arrived for work that morning, but she left the stand with potatoes, onions, green peppers, zucchini and a cucumber. She said it was a good addition to the many programs being introduced as part of HBI.

“It gives people the opportunity to go to a farmers market who don’t have time to during the week,” she said. “There was a good selection.”
