DLA Installation Support leaders outline fiscal 2014 goals
3/28/2014
By Beth Reece

Defense Logistics Agency Installation Support leaders briefed DLA Director Navy Vice Adm. Mark Harnitchek on the directorate’s fiscal 2014 Annual Operating Plan March 26.

DLA Installation Support manages programs that support facilities and infrastructure management, including installation management; morale, welfare and recreation; occupational safety and health; environmental management; security and emergency services; and business management.

Expected improvements range from increased energy conservation to accreditation of the Child Development Center at McNamara Headquarters Complex. Security officials will put more emphasis on antiterrorism vulnerability assessments, while installation management officials work to increase energy conservation and reduce petroleum use by lowering the number of vehicles in DLA’s fleet.

Other initiatives include reducing incident rates throughout the agency and speeding up the correction of potential health and safety hazards. Morale, welfare and recreation officials will also continue to improve food and beverage service and quality, and expand programs offered through the Healthy Base Initiative.

Before the meeting, Harnitchek recognized several DLA Installation Support employees. He presented the Superior Civilian Service Award to Dave Hamel and Phil Dawson for deploying to Afghanistan to establish a safety program for DLA Disposition Services.

“I’ve been there at least two or three times since they were there, and not only is the crew there focused on doing the mission, they’re also focused on doing the mission safely. That, frankly, would not have happened without the work of Dave and Phil. I know that you’ve saved limbs and maybe a few lives,” the director said.

Jonathan Mathews received a Site Excellence Award for work in support of the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System and Real-time Automated Personnel Identification at DLA Distribution San Joaquin, Calif.

Don Martin was recognized for his work tracking the 14,000 gallon jet-fuel spill at Fort Hood, Texas, and for assessing what DLA resources would be required to support the response.

The following employees were also given commander’s coins for their contributions to the expansion of the Fitness Center at the McNamara Headquarters Complex: Tamberly Averett, Loren Powell, Jim Turzak, Darrell Garner, Mike Watts, Charles Martin, Greg Cummings, Beverly Williams, John Bustle, Louie Jones and Paul Cooper.
