Gibbons inducted into the Army Quartermaster Hall of Fame

By Stephanie Buggs, DLA Energy Student Trainee

Former Defense Logistics Agency Energy Middle East Commander retired Army Col. Greg Gibbons was inducted into the U.S. Army Quartermaster Hall of Fame at Fort Lee, Virginia, July 11.

Gibbons was the commander of Defense Fuel Support Center Middle East Region, now DLA Energy Middle East, during Operation Desert Shield/Storm in 1991.

The U.S. Army Quartermaster Hall of Fame award is the highest form of recognition that the U.S. Army Quartermaster Regiment offers. The award honors individuals who have made the most significant contributions to the overall history and traditions of the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps.

Gibbons was selected for the Hall of Fame in recognition of his critical combat support contributions as commander of DFSC Middle East. His leadership led to the successful sustainment of all U.S. Central Command forces with critical combat fuel supporting Operation Desert Shield.

DLA Energy U.S. Transportation Command Liaison Officer Frank Wright highlighted Gibbons’ accomplishments in the nomination package.

“Gibbons orchestrated regional assets of mission essential petroleum products in support of the critical deployment of more than 500,000 personnel, 1,300 aircraft, 100 capital ships, and tens of thousands of armor, artillery, and tactical vehicles from the continental U.S. and Central Europe bases,” Wright said. “From his region headquarters in Bahrain, Gibbons traveled extensively throughout the Middle East coordinating fuel support for all coalition military units. His quick and thorough actions ensured that reliable and sustainable fuel supply sources (not previously available) were established. His efforts were instrumental in ensuring the success of one of the largest deployments of U.S. forces in our history.”

Gibbons later led and optimized all technical training for more than 6,500 U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps Petroleum personnel at the U.S. Army Quartermaster School. He commanded the Army’s 49th Quartermaster Group (petroleum and water) from 1993 to 1994. He later served as the chief for the Army Energy Office from 1995 to 1997 where he assisted in establishing global fuel policy for the Army.

Gibbons retired in 1997 from the Army with 27 years of service.
