Audit Task Force Road Show

By Elizabeth Stoeckmann DLA Energy Public Affairs

Defense Logistics Agency Audit Task Force Lead Navy Rear Adm. Deborah Haven and DLA Energy Commander Air Force Brig. Gen. Albert Miller held an audit readiness road show in the McNamara Auditorium, Fort Belvoir, Virginia, June 3.

The road show theme was “Building Connections” and provided a review of employee roles in the Ernst & Young audit of DLA’s financial statements, the audit process and upcoming areas of audit focus.

“Audit readiness is everyone’s responsibility across the enterprise,” Miller said. “It’s important for all Energy employees to understand what it means to be ‘audit ready’ and how day-to-day tasks impact the financial statements.”

Before beginning the presentation, Haven and Miller took time to recognize individuals for their ongoing contributions to the audit:

• DLA Energy site visit leads Douglas Collins, David Van Winkle and Frank Albert played a key role in the internal control testing walkthroughs and fiscal year-end inventory assessment.

• Tammie Morris was instrumental in her work across the business units to develop an internal battle rhythm in support of substantive testing efforts.

• Shannon Lane and Russell Foye focused their efforts coordinating more than 100 requests for information from Independent Public Accountant Ernst & Young.

• Matt Saurage and Dan Bard were key leaders in sustaining audit readiness addressing requests for information in a timely manner and resolving discrepancies.

“Everyone is involved with the audit, and you’ve done a great job with the heavy lifting efforts of the audit,” Haven said to the Energy workforce. “Each and every one of you should be proud of what we have accomplished not only for our nation but for our allies.”

Haven told attendees that DLA aligns well with the National Defense Strategy especially when it comes to the audit and responsiveness to the taxpayer and the Warfighter, and said it’s even more important that every action has the proper thread to the financial statements.

Haven presented a leadership audit video on behalf of DLA Director Army Lt. Gen. Darryl Williams who said that auditability is a crosscutting effort and is everyone’s responsibility from the director down to the warehouse worker and across the enterprise as a whole – we all have to do our part.

“The goal of the audit is to get a clean, unmodified opinion,” Haven said as she explained the evolution of audit trends. “While the audit phases overlap each other, it’s important to get to a controlled space in the audit cycle and follow a robust matrix going forward.”

Haven introduced the A-123 Program Manager Kelleye Elmore. The A-123 Internal Control Program and the Financial Statement Audit are complementary processes that, when integrated, provide management with the information needed to support remediation and effectively sustain an audit remediation posture.

Khalid Hamidi, DLA Energy Chief, Auditability & Sustainment Office spoke to the attendees about how DLA Energy can help with the audit before senior leaders concluded the road show with questions from attendees.

As part of the DLA Audit Task Force goals, Haven and the ATF team will present the road show for every DLA Major Subordinate Command.
