Hispanic Heritage Month Spotlight: Yesenia Mejias

DLA Energy Public Affairs

Editor’s Note: Defense Logistics Agency Energy recognizes Hispanic Heritage Month Sept. 15 through Oct. 15. In honor of Hispanics’ contributions to the agency’s global mission, DLA Energy Public Affairs is highlighting Hispanic Americans who work daily to provide logistics support to America’s Warfighters.

My name is: Yesenia Mejias

I am: A management analyst in the Military Support Office within the DLA Energy Manpower Division. I am Puerto Rican.

Describe your job in a sentence: I serve as the focal point for the DLA Energy Army Reserve military personnel actions (awards, evaluations, readiness, etc.). My work is demanding, time consuming and rewarding.

How long have you worked at DLA? I was an Army sergeant first class for three years at DLA, and now I’ve been a Department of Defense civilian for two years.

What is your favorite thing about working for DLA? Our mission-focused requirements and operating in a safe, professional and flexible environment.

What are your best memories of working here? My first was when I saw my son singing during the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony at DLA. He was part of the Headquarters Complex Child Development Center at the time. Secondly, the annual DLA family day which brings all the directorates together to celebrate and honor the thousands of families that support each DLA employee behind the scenes.

How do you make a difference? I believe I make a difference by educating myself and my children to become better citizens who can change society and provide a better life for future generations.

What is one thing you'd like others to know about your heritage? Puerto Ricans are a mix from Taino Indian, African and Spanish people. Our music comes from African influence. Puerto Rico was colonized by Spain in 1493 and became a U.S. Territory in 1898. We are well known for boxing and baseball.

Why is it important to you that we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month? I believe is important to recognize all the different Hispanic Cultures during this month as many of us contribute to the future of our nation daily. We believe in God, family, and a bright future for everybody that lives in our nation.
