The MOVSM recognizes members of the military, including Active Duty, Reserve and National Guard service members, who perform substantial volunteer service to the local community above and beyond the duties required as a member of the U.S. Armed Forces. Such volunteer service must be made in a sustained and direct nature towards the civilian community, must be significant in nature to produce tangible results and must reflect favorably on the military service and the Department of Defense.

There’s no time limit required for the MOVSM, however most awarding authorities require that the volunteer service must exceed three years in length or include a minimum 500 hours of service.

Edwards has served in the Navy since January 2011, and has been assigned to the Pearl Harbor detachment since 2015. While assigned to the detachment, she performs the missions and functions of command lead petty officer and assists the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard in expediting parts and materials to the Intermediate Maintenance Facility.

“Edwards has been the epitome of selfless volunteerism who dedicated countless hours and made tremendous efforts to making the lives of those around her better,” said DLA Maritime Pearl Harbor Director Navy Cdr. Bruce Reilly. “Her commitment to Hawaii charities is a significant testament to her unequaled commitment to the welfare of others within the civilian community.”

Edwards volunteered at organizations including: Habitat for Humanity; Morale, Welfare and Recreation USA Track and Field; Family Programs’ Hawaii Holiday Party; Hawaii Food Bank Commodity Supplemental Food Program; Nimitz Beach clean-up; Operation Hele; Special Olympics Hawaii; Alzheimer’s Disease Foundation; United Service Organization and local elementary, middle and high school fitness and activity days

“Her superb devotion to excellence sets the highest standards for volunteering and sets an example for others to emulate,” Reilly said.

Her next assignment will be with the Navy’s Patrol Squadron Eight in Jacksonville, Florida and she expects to report in December 2018.
