NY hospital gets infant bed donation

By Jake Joy DLA Disposition Services Public Affairs

St. Charles Hospital, in Port Jefferson on New York’s Long Island, received five neonatal intensive care-type infant beds in late September via donation from the Defense Logistics Agency Disposition Services site in Susquehanna, Pennsylvania.

The beds were described as “like new” by Property Disposal Specialist Cindy Anderson, who said the equipment was turned in to DLA for possible reuse, transfer, donation or sale by the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

The beds were originally valued at $30,000 apiece, are enclosed and engineered to handle a variety of lifesaving and vital sign monitoring tools typically used in a neonatal intensive care unit.

St. Charles Hospital qualified for the equipment donation through its New York State Agency for Surplus Property and the partnership between DLA and the General Services Administration that allows a variety of non-profit entities to access and request items directly from DLA’s used and surplus inventory list.

St. Charles began as a home for handicapped children in 1909 and was dedicated as a hospital the next year. According to the hospital’s website, “each year, approximately 1,500 babies are born at St. Charles, and a team of Board Certified neonatologists provide 24-hour-a-day coverage to ensure that special needs newborns receive the highest level of care.”
