Overcoming Alaskan-sized challenges to provide energy assurance

TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. — Logistics In Action: Article originally appeared on the U.S. Air Force Civil Engineer Center website — Preparing for a major power outage or planning a backup generation exercise is complicated in the best conditions. Now, imagine doing it in temperatures as low as 50 degrees below zero at Clear Air Force Station, Alaska.

Bituminous coal is removed from a shuttered power plant at U.S. Navy Surface Warfare Center Indian Head in Maryland. The DLA Disposition Services assistance in finding a new home for the coal saved an estimated $6 million in removal costs.
