Land and Maritime veteran runs Marine Corps Marathon in honor of fallen

Jon Ferguson trained for four months – covering roughly 400 miles – to prepare himself for a big moment in late October. The Marine Corps veteran and current Defense Logistics Agency Land and Maritime associate completed the Marine Corps Marathon Oct. 27 in Washington, D.C. It was Ferguson’s first time running the race and second marathon ever.

Linda Johnson retires after 36 years

A longtime leader bid farewell to the Defense Logistics Agency Land and Maritime Oct. 24. Linda Johnson, deputy director of the Land Customer Operations directorate, retired after 36 years of federal service. In her final role, Johnson helped lead the team responsible for readiness support to nearly 19,000 U.S. Army and Marine Corps customers, with sales orders worth approximately $7.4 billion.

Engineers defend title at annual boat race

To fans of the late 60s comedy Gilligan’s Island, the crew of the SS Minnow were known for their doomed “three-hour tour” that ended with them shipwrecked and marooned on an uncharted island. But for fans of the Defense Supply Center Columbus’ Navy Cardboard Regatta, the two-man crew of the re-tooled SS “Winnow” are known as four-time champions of the center’s annual boat race in celebration of the U.S Navy’s 244th birthday.

65th Infantry ‘Borinqueneers’ honored at annual heritage event

The Defense Federal Community honored a unique military unit during its annual Hispanic Heritage Month celebration Oct. 2. The observance commemorated the historical contributions of the U.S. Army’s 65th Infantry Regiment – a unit comprised mainly of Hispanic Soldiers and known as the Borinqueneers for its Puerto Rican roots.

Defense Logistics Agency Land and Maritime’s newly appointed Deputy Commander Ken Watson officially reported for duty Oct 15. He replaced Steven Alsup, who retired from the Senior Executive Service corps this past June after more than 33 years of federal service.

DSCC Highlights National Preparedness Month Activities

The Security Operations Branch, Security & Emergency Services Division, DLA Installation Management Columbus planned and coordinated participation in numerous events and activities as part of National Preparedness Month during the month of September. The goal was to provide information to installation employees to make them better prepared for emergencies at home, at work and in the community.

Land and Maritime associate named to Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame

The Ohio Department of Veterans Services announced the 2019 Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame class in a statement Sept. 26. Army Col. John Dreska is among 20 inductees who will be inducted in November for their post-military service and accomplishments. In addition to his military service, Dreska works for the Defense Logistics Agency Land and Maritime as the division chief for batteries, tires and engines.

Strategic Partnerships and Workforce Development Continues

The Defense Logistics Agency Land and Maritime Planning and Industrial Support Division conducted an Industrial Support Activity training session Sept. 5 with personnel from the Anniston Army Depot in Anniston, Alabama, their second iteration in a series of planned training sessions. The training is designed to strengthen partnerships, improve customer support and connect the efforts of the DLA team with the outcomes achieved at the ISA. Strong Partnerships is one of five lines of effort advanced by Defense Logistics Agency Director Lt. Gen. Darrell Williams as a roadmap to ensure victory against trans-regional multi-domain threats, in an increasingly complex global environment.

The senior Air Force officer in command of The Ohio State University’s Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps highlighted the Defense Federal Community’s 72nd Air Force birthday Sept. 18 at the Defense Logistics Agency Land and Maritime Operations Center Auditorium.

DLA Joint Reserve Force’s Audit Task Force commander retires following 32 years of service

Navy Rear Adm. Deborah Haven celebrated 32 years of military service during a retirement ceremony in the Operations Center Auditorium September 6 at the Defense Supply Center Columbus, where she previously completed 29 years of Federal Service as a civilian logistician. In her final assignment, Haven served as the DLA Joint Reserve Force’s Audit Task Force commander. Haven, a native of Philadelphia, is an alumnus of The University of Maryland and holds a Master of Business Administration from LaSalle University in Philadelphia. Haven stated she joined the Navy after falling in love with logistics in college and wanted to be part of the military’s vast, global mission.

Family celebrates Army Officer's promotion

It was a family celebration Sept. 6 when Maj. Bruce Neighbor was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve. Neighbor’s wife, Kristin, and sons, Zane (left) and Zachary (right), were on hand to place their father’s new rank on his uniform during a ceremony at the Defense Logistics Agency Land and Maritime headquarters, where Neighbor is a member of the DLA Joint Reserve Force.
