Protecting Ohio waters this winter – be salt smart
Did you know that it only takes one teaspoon of road salt to permanently pollute five gallons of water to a level that is toxic for freshwater ecosystems? While salt application to roadways is a common practice for driver safety, the excess salt may pollute streams and lakes making it difficult for fish, frogs, mussels, insects and waterfowl to survive.

DSCC Child Development Center garden teaches children about science and cooperation
COLUMBUS, Ohio — The sun was shining, birds chirping, and the bumblebees were buzzing amid the cacophony of little voices from seven pre-K classes as they took turns to bring their garden to life after a long winter’s sleep in front of the Defense Supply Center Columbus’ Child Development Center June 8. The garden serves as an experiential learning experience and is an extension of the curriculum provided in the classroom.

DSCC fuel point project to provide long-term solution for aging tanks
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Three 10,000-gallon fuel tanks were installed at Defense Supply Center Columbus June 1, marking the beginning of a long-term project at the installation’s fuel point to replace aging underground fuel storage tanks with above-ground tanks.

DSCC named Tree City USA for the fourth consecutive year
MT VERNON, Ohio — Defense Supply Center Columbus was named a Tree City USA for the fourth consecutive year at the annual Tree City USA Awards Presentation on April 21 in the Schnormeier Event Center in Ariel-Foundation Park in Mt. Vernon, Ohio. The all-day event was attended by representatives from 45 communities across 15 counties in Central Ohio.

DSCC plants saplings at MWR Sports Park
COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Defense Supply Center Columbus Installation Management Team planted 50 tree saplings at the DSCC MWR Sports Park this summer. The saplings were donated through an Urban Tree Project partnership in consult with the City of Columbus and the Urban Tree Master Plan Project to identify sites for potential tree plantings and expand the city’s existing tree canopy.

Children bring their care center to life
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Children at the Child Development Center repopulated their garden with vegetables and flowers May 22. Every Kindergarten Preparatory student planted at least one seedling under the care of Environmental Division and CDC staff. Preschool and toddler classrooms will assist with watering and care during the growing season.
2019 Shred Day success
COLUMBUS, Ohio — DSCC Environmental Division collaborated with MWR to save 27 cubic yards of paper from entering the local landfill May 15. Shred Day was open to all DSCC associates for personal shredding and employees recycled 13,165 pounds of paper, which is equivalent to 6.5 tons.
