This month, the Nation celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.  This landmark legislation, which outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, and national origin, was envisioned by President John F. Kennedy and signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964.
While the anniversary of the Civil Rights Act is a time to celebrate our country’s accomplishments over the past 50 years, it is also a time to reflect on our collective, ongoing commitment to ensuring fairness and equality in all facets of our employment processes, programs and services. 

Just as the provisions of the Civil Rights Act provided the foundation for critical discussion and action necessary to broadly transform our thinking and society, we must remain diligent in removing workplace barriers that serve as obstacles to our ability to retain a diverse workforce needed to accomplish the DLA mission.  We must also ensure that all members of our workforce are valued and treated respectfully. 

DLA’s diversity is its strength.  Our commitment to equality is expressed in the Agency’s Strategic Plan which highlights the need to “foster a diverse workforce and support a culture to deliver sustained mission excellence.”  Leveraging our diversity and abilities will only add to our organization’s readiness, effectiveness, and inclusiveness. 

Fifty years after the Civil Rights Act’s passage, the men and women of DLA are ensuring that fairness and equality cascades to all facets of our businesses practices. DLA continues to honor the spirit and intent of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and its guiding principles so each employee enjoys the full promise of equal opportunity for all.
